The "Drone Replaces Everything" Myth

Visual Comparison - Drone vs Total Station

With the technological advance of RTK/LiDAR drones, the myth arose that the classic surveyor has become redundant. False. The two technologies are complementary, not exclusive.

1. Accuracy Analysis

Total Station (TS)

  • Accuracy: Millimetric (2-3 mm).
  • Strengths: Can measure hidden building corners, points under eaves, exact property boundaries down to the "nail".
  • Limitations: Requires direct Line of Sight. If you have a hill in front, you can't see what's behind.

Drone Photogrammetry (UAV)

  • Accuracy: Centimetric (2-5 cm GSD).
  • Strengths: Incredible density of information. It doesn't just measure 100 points, but millions. You see every pothole, every curb.
  • Limitations: Dense vegetation is enemy #1 for photogrammetry (but solvable with LiDAR).

2. Cost and Efficiency Analysis

Scenario A: Urban plot of 1,000 sqm (Individual House)

  • Classic: 2 hours field, 2 hours office.
  • Drone: Inefficient. Flight prep time, processing, GCPs exceed the classic method.
  • Winner: Total Station / GPS.

Scenario B: Rural land of 50 hectares (Photovoltaic Park)

  • Classic: Would take 2-3 weeks of intense fieldwork with a 2-man team.
  • Drone: 1 day of flight + 2 days of computer processing.
  • Clear Winner: Drone. Cost reduction of up to 70%.

3. The Hybrid Solution: "Best of Both Worlds"

At Studii de Teren SRL, our standard approach for medium/large projects is hybrid:

  1. We fly the drone to obtain the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and Orthophotoplan (overview image).
  2. We use the Total Station/GPS to measure critical points (property boundaries, structural elements, GCPs for drone calibration).

Thus, you get the speed of the drone combined with the legal accuracy of the total station.

Which system the data ends up in, and why a bad conversion costs metres: Stereo 70 versus ETRS89. Rates for both methods are in the service catalogue, in Romanian.
